Coming into the 2015-16 season, Coach Amat remains focused as ever in leading the Warriors to another dominant campaign. Having built a tremendous reputation for having a quality program, the Warriors will travel throughout the State of Florida competing against the very best. After 11 exciting years at the helm, coach Amat looks forward to the challenges of remaining “on the mountain-top” of high school basketball in South Florida, while guiding his young players to another possible State Championship.

Coach Amat’s numerous accomplishments at the helm of the Warrior program have included ushering Westwood back into the spotlight of Dade County basketball, with impressive victories over one-time dominant opponents. Leading the Warriors back into the limelight, while focusing on developing his players to become solid Christian student-athletes remains his number 1 priority.

In 2006-07, Coach Amat built on his success of his first season, as Westwood increased their win total by twice the amount of games. Having the youngest starting-five in the entire state of Florida, including 2 eighth graders and 2 freshmen, the Warriors posted several unexpected victories against quality opponents. Even more impressive was their efforts against bigger, more developed schools in the 5A and 6A levels.

Coach Amat and the Warriors accomplished several “firsts” during the 2008 season. Recording the biggest single-season turnaround in school history, the Warriors won a total of 18 games. The Warriors also swept their 2-game regular season series against Westminster Christian, Palmer and Miami Country Day. Finishing as the top regular season team, with only 1-district loss was a stunning surprise to all except coach Amat and his staff. “We are instilling pride & passion back into the program” Amat said.

The 2011-12 season was highlighted by Coach Amat guiding the Warriors to the coveted District Title. Once accomplishing that difficult task, he continued to churn-out victories in Regional play, reaching the Regional Finals for the first time in Westwood’s 50 year history. Coach Amat relied on his trademark “intense defensive style” to guide his team to a 22-win season, placing the Warriors amongst the elite in Dade County basketball.

For the 2013-14 season coach Amat led our Warriors into battle, while they captured their 3rd straight District Crown, and also reaching the Regional Finals for a third straight season as well. Having accomplished a major goal of reaching the Final Four in Lakeland the previous season, and placing two players on the All-County & All-State teams, coach Amat continued his remarkable run through the top teams in the State. A true testimony to hard-work and dedication to the sport have helped guide him and the Warriors into Elite Status.

Coach Amat is a proud alumnus of Westwood Christian School, having graduated in 1990. He is the manager of Aldo Surgical & Hospital Supply and is also the league coordinator for South Florida’s largest adult basketball league, He is inspired by his role-model & father Jose Amat Sr. “My father’s accomplishments in life, through his tireless work-ethic and strong faith in the Lord, are something I can only dream of achieving.” Coach Amat has been married for 12 years to Milena & has two wonderful children, Lauren & Jose III.
